Crude Oil Enters the Refinery<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Crude oil is extracted from oil wells and transported to refineries through pipelines or oil tankers Crude oil contains a mix of light and heavy components\u2014such as gasoline (light) and diesel, lubricants, and bitumen (heavy).<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Atmospheric Distillation of Crude Oil<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>the first step is <strong>atmospheric <\/strong>distillation. Crude oil is heated to around 350\u2013400\u00b0C in a tall distillation column.<br>\u2022 Lighter components like <strong>gas, gasoline, kerosene, and diesel<\/strong> evaporate and are collected at the top of the column.<br>\u2022 Heavier materials remain at the bottom\u2014this thick, dark liquid is called residual oil or <strong>mazut<\/strong>.<br><br><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Vacuum Distillation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Mazut still contains useful heavy components that can be turned into bitumen. It\u2019s sent to a second unit called the vacuum distillation column. \u2022 In this column, pressure is reduced so distillation can occur at lower temperatures\u2014avoiding thermal cracking.<br>\u2022 The result is a thick substance called <strong>vacuum bottom<\/strong> or vacuum residue, which is the base material for making bitumen.<br><br><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong>4. Turning Vacuum Bottom into Bitumen<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Vacuum bottom is technically already a type of bitumen. But to make it suitable for various applications, it\u2019s further processed in two main ways:<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong>a) Air Blowing Process<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>In this method, hot air (around 200\u2013300\u00b0C) is blown into the vacuum bottom. This process:<br>\u2022 Makes the bitumen <strong>harder<\/strong> and <strong>more durable<\/strong>.<br>\u2022 Increases its resistance to heat and improves adhesive properties.<br>\u2022<strong> Produces oxidized bitumen<\/strong> (also known as blown bitumen), which is commonly used in waterproofing and roofing (like in membranes and insulation).<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong>b) Adding Polymers (for Modified Bitumen)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Sometimes, polymers or chemical additives are mixed with bitumen to improve:<br>\u2022 <strong>Flexibility<\/strong><br>\u2022 Resistance to cracking<br>\u2022 Durability against temperature changes<br>This is how polymer-modified bitumen is created, ideal for roads with heavy traffic or harsh climates.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong>5. Storage and Packaging<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The final bitumen is either:<br>\u2022 Stored in <strong>heated tanks<\/strong> and transported directly to construction sites, or<br>\u2022 Packed into <strong>drums, bags, or custom<\/strong> containers for export or domestic use.<br><br><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In Summary<\/h3>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Bitumen is the final, heavy residue from crude oil refining. After lighter fuels are removed, what\u2019s left is carefully processed into bitumen.
